This "The Game of Life" Android app from Firefly lets you play the classic simulation game known as "Conway's Game of life" or simply "Life".

This so-called "zero player game" simulates life by populating and unpopulating squares on a grid based on 4 simple rules. Populated cells are considered "alive" and unpopulated cells are "dead". Living cells die if they have fewer than two or more than three neighbors and a dead cell will become alive if it has exactly three neighbors. The player creates an initial pattern of cells, then starts the simulation and watches as life grows and develops from their initial pattern. Although the created cells appear random at first, under observation it becomes clear that particular repeated patterns will show up over and over again and sustain themselves or even move around the board. These shapes, known as "still lifes", "oscillators" and "spaceships", are a natural result of the defined rules and represent what's truly interesting about Conway's Game of Life.

Although Conway's Game of Life is a fun toy, it has become the topic of conversation for scholars in a wide variety of fields including physics, philosophy, mathematics and genetics. Conway's game is more than just a game; it's a deep and complex metaphor for the very nature of the world we live in.
